In Praise of Shadows, Victoria and Albert Museum, London

SonUmbra was on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum for the London Design Festival 2009.
'In Praise of Shadows' is a project which has been organised by EUNIC - a network of European Cultural Centres - together with the support of the EC's office in London - to mark the initial phasing-out of low-efficiency light bulbs. The project is curated by Jane Withers and includes works by twenty European designers who bring imaginative thinking to the potential of low energy lighting.

"What do you get when you pair a scientific researcher with a textile designer? Designers fundamentally shape the way we live, while scientists pervade the very fabric of our lives. Nobel textiles involves a journey into the interface between science and design, a dialogue between leading researchers in both fields."
As a research fellow at Central Saint Martins College Rachel liaised with a Nobel prize-winning scientist to develop textiles based on scientific discovery.

The first international scientific conference in the Ambience series was held in Tampere, Finland in 2005. The second Ambience conference will now be held at the University College of Borås, Sweden on June 2-3, 2008.
The theme for the 2008 conference is “Smart Textiles – Technology and Design” and Rachel was keynote speaker where she discussed our studio's recent works.
