Language of Pattern
The ability to perceive pattern and make connections, to see parts in relation to the whole, is vital to us in the West where a culture based on dichotomy (art-science, material-spiritual, etc) has been led by a rapidly developing technology towards excessive analysis at the expense of synthesis.
The language of pattern - an enquiry inspired by Islamic decoration, K. Albarn, J. Smith, S. Stelle, D. Walker, Thames and Hudson, London, 1974
We are continually exploring richer forms of communication with our environment and have been investigating the dynamic language of geometry and pattern. Our core philosophy focuses on pattern as a design principle in nature, from plant growth to cycles in time. Pattern should be understood as a universal language to recognise and apply interconnectedness and to develop the environmental wisdom necessary to make us native, indigenous people to this planet.

Permaculture philosophy
"Permaculture is the art and science that applies patterns found in nature to the design and construction of human and natural environments. Only by applying such patterns and principles to the built environment can we truly achieve a sustainable living system. Permaculture principles are now being adapted to all systems and disciplines that human settlement requires. Architects, planners, farmers, economists, social scientists, as well as students, homeowners and gardeners can utilize the principles of Permaculture Design."
